February 1st – 7th is Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) in Canada.
Eating disorders are a complex psychiatric illness currently affecting approximately 55,000 Albertans. Anorexia is also the third most common childhood illness (behind Asthma and Type One Diabetes). This puts an extraordinary number of men, women, and children at risk, as eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
As a grassroots nonprofit founded in 2014, EDSNA’s mandate is to ensure that no one in Alberta should face an eating disorder alone. Of those 55,000 Albertans who have a diagnosable eating disorder, only a fraction will access treatment or support- an inadequate number of resources available, troubling wait times, and the secrecy inherent to this devastating illness are all contributing factors. This is incredibly problematic, as the longer an eating disorder goes untreated the harder it becomes to fully recover.
